Tim Edwards: Elevating Workplace Safety and HR Leadership in the RV Industry

Tariff Developments: What RVIA Members Need To Know

In the bustling world of recreational vehicles, Tim Edwards stands out as a beacon of leadership and dedication to workplace safety. As the Director of Human Resources at Thor Motor Coach and the Chair of the RV Industry Association’s Workplace Safety Committee, Edwards is committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all employees. His journey in the RV industry is a testament to his unwavering dedication to employee welfare and professional growth.

Edwards’ career in the RV industry began in 2001, after a brief stint in the retail sector. “I had just been transferred to a Walmart in Kokomo, Indiana, as an assistant manager,” he recalls. “My fiancé was working in Goshen, and soon I found myself joining Keystone RV.” At Keystone, Edwards initially handled hands-on tasks such as pre-delivery inspections and water pressure checks. Over time, he evolved into a group leader, launching new product lines.

In 2007, Edwards transitioned into the Human Resources department at Keystone RV. By 2010, he was the Human Resources Manager, a role he held until 2018. His mentor, Ken Julian, who had moved to THOR Industries, offered him the position of Director of Human Resources at THOR Industries Corporate Office, a role he embraced until 2024. When the opportunity arose to lead Thor Motor Coach’s HR department, Edwards eagerly accepted.

“I’ve spent half of my life in this industry,” Edwards notes. “It’s been an exciting journey. I’ve used my story to inspire others, emphasizing that career paths are only as limited as one allows them to be.” At Thor Motor Coach, Edwards focuses on employee relations, safety, recruitment, and development opportunities. He is particularly passionate about mentoring his HR team and preparing them for future leadership roles.

“Developing my team is crucial,” Edwards explains. “I want a deep bench for succession planning. I’ve been fortunate to be mentored by great leaders, and I aim to pass that along.” Under his guidance, Thor Motor Coach is nurturing its talent through an internal management development program. “We want employees to see a clear path for growth,” Edwards says. “We can teach the technical aspects if they have the right mindset and attitude.”

In addition to his HR duties, Edwards plays a pivotal role in the RV Industry Association as Chair of the Workplace Safety Committee. His involvement began at Keystone RV, where he participated in informal safety discussions with industry peers. Recognizing the importance of safety, Edwards helped elevate the Task Force to a Committee, with unanimous support from the RV Industry Association’s Board.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee faced challenges in ensuring worker safety. “We had to find ways for workers to safely transition back to work,” Edwards recalls. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the Committee’s mission to promote continuous safety improvements.

Edwards’ commitment to safety is evident in his participation at the RV Industry Association’s Leadership Conference, where he emphasized the importance of safety as a foundation for retaining talent. “Safety is a foundational need,” he says, “and a great starting point when discussing turnover rates.”

Reflecting on his career, Edwards expresses gratitude for the opportunities he’s had. “It’s been quite a journey,” he says. “From starting with little RV experience to leading a Committee and speaking at industry events, it’s been a wild ride. I look forward to continuing my role with the RV Industry Association and seeing where it takes us.”
