Artificial intelligence (AI) is on the cusp of revolutionizing workforce dynamics in India, with organizations poised to witness significant changes in the next few years. A recent study highlights the rapid adoption of AI technologies and their potential to reduce labor costs by a substantial margin. According to a survey conducted by Salesforce, involving 200 human resource executives from various companies, 92% acknowledge that integrating digital labor with the existing workforce will be a critical aspect of their roles.

As the digital landscape evolves, almost 85% of Indian HR leaders anticipate a future workforce comprising both humans and AI agents in the next five years. However, despite the optimism, 88% of organizations have yet to fully embrace agentic AI. The survey projects a remarkable 383% growth in AI agent adoption within organizations by 2027, increasing from the current 12% to 58% in just two years.

Chief Human Resource Officers (CHROs) in India are preparing for a significant shift in workforce management as they expect to redeploy nearly a quarter (24.7%) of their employees while embracing digital labor. A remarkable 93% of CHROs believe that AI agents and digital labor will empower them to reassign employees to new, more relevant roles, enhancing overall productivity.

Once AI is fully integrated, organizations foresee an average employee productivity gain of 41.7%, coupled with a 26.2% reduction in labor costs. CHROs are convinced that redeployment offers a more cost-effective approach compared to hiring externally for new roles. Consequently, they are actively reskilling 15% of their workforce and have plans to reskill 73% of employees for positions with promising future opportunities.

However, despite the transformative potential of digital labor, there is a notable disconnect among employees regarding its impact on their work. Employees remain uncertain about how digital labor will reshape their roles and responsibilities.

Nathalie Scardino, President and Chief People Officer at Salesforce, captures the essence of this transformation, stating, “We’re in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation of work with digital labor that is unlocking new levels of productivity, autonomy, and agency at a speed never before thought possible.” Scardino emphasizes the need for industries to redesign jobs, reskill, and redeploy talent, highlighting that every employee must acquire new human, agent, and business skills to thrive in the ongoing digital labor revolution.

As organizations navigate this transformative landscape, the emphasis on reskilling and redeployment emerges as a strategic imperative. By fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability, companies can harness the full potential of AI, unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation.

The shift towards a digitally empowered workforce signifies a paradigm shift in how businesses operate, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and investment in digital infrastructure. As AI continues to reshape the workforce, the collaboration between human and digital labor will define the future of work, promising unprecedented levels of efficiency and productivity.
