At the University of Michigan, employees across different departments and campuses are stepping up to promote a healthier work environment as MHealthy Champions. This initiative welcomes individuals from various roles, including a lecturer at the School of Music Theater and Dance, a registered nurse at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, and the marketing manager for the Ross School of Business, among others. These champions form a network of more than 550 volunteers dedicated to enhancing the culture of well-being and connection among their colleagues.

The MHealthy Champion program is a remarkable opportunity for any active, benefits-eligible employee, whether working in-person, remote, or hybrid, to apply and contribute to their department, area, or unit. The application period is open until July 31, and interested employees are encouraged to seize this chance to make a difference.

Champions commit to dedicating approximately two hours per month over a two-year period to fulfill their responsibilities. With guidance from MHealthy and support from their supervisors, champions engage in activities tailored to their specific areas. Their duties include:

– Collaborating with MHealthy to design customized activities for their department.
– Supporting the health and well-being goals of their area.
– Communicating opportunities and encouraging participation in well-being programs and activities.
– Fostering connections in the modern work environment.

To aid champions in their roles, MHealthy provides access to several resources. Champions benefit from the support of a dedicated MHealthy Wellness Coordinator who assists in setting wellness goals and implementing tailored programming. Additionally, monthly learning and engagement opportunities led by subject matter experts cover a diverse range of well-being topics, ensuring champions are well-equipped to support their colleagues.

Moreover, champions gain access to a dedicated online portal, offering exclusive training and learning opportunities, educational materials, and a peer network. This platform enables champions to ask questions, share experiences, and find encouragement from fellow champions across the university.

Paola Savvidou, a lecturer III in the School of Music Theater and Dance, shares her enthusiasm for the program: “I thought, wow, MHealthy is an incredible resource that I should really be connected with and I’m so glad I did. They offer education, support, and a wonderful community of other champions around the university. I can tap into them to ask questions, see how programming works for them, what they’ve done, and what they’ve learned.”

For those interested in becoming an MHealthy Champion, the application process includes supervisor approval to ensure alignment and support for their role. This initiative not only enhances personal growth and professional development but also contributes significantly to the well-being of the entire university community.
