AI and Upskilling Set to Transform HR by 2025

AI and Upskilling Lead HR Innovation in India

India’s HR sector is undergoing a major transformation as technology and skill development become pivotal to organizational success. According to Capterra India’s 2025 HR Software Trends Survey, Indian companies are increasingly leaning into Artificial Intelligence (AI) and employee upskilling to meet evolving workforce challenges. The study, which gathered insights from 294 HR professionals across the country, reveals how businesses are adapting to rising operational costs, skills shortages, and the growing influence of AI.

Upskilling Becomes a Strategic Necessity

One of the survey’s main findings is the urgent need for workforce upskilling. Nearly 49% of HR professionals identified training and upskilling current employees as their top operational concern for the coming year. Furthermore, 55% of respondents reported that training new users on HR software remains a significant challenge.

Interestingly, 72% of Indian organizations already use AI features in their HR software, a figure well above the global average of 55%. This growing adoption is driving demand for AI-specific skills, making upskilling not just a developmental goal but a strategic imperative.

AI Implementation Requires Risk-Ready Strategies

While AI adoption is on the rise, effective implementation remains a challenge. Over 56% of HR leaders cited difficulties in deploying HR software, and 54% expressed concerns about evaluating AI’s value and risks. Security continues to be a top priority, with 67% of respondents listing it as a key consideration when researching HR software.

Additionally, 58% of HR teams mentioned that security concerns were a major factor influencing software purchases in the past year. The survey also highlighted concerns around data accuracy, transparency in AI decision-making, and privacy implications.

AI Enhances Employee Engagement and Retention

Improving employee engagement and retention emerged as critical objectives. 48% of HR leaders cited engagement, and 34% pointed to retention as ongoing challenges. The data shows that AI can offer tangible benefits in these areas.

Among HR software users with AI features, 57% reported increased employee satisfaction or engagement, compared to just 49% among companies not using AI. Similarly, 55% of AI users saw improved retention, while only 38% of non-AI users observed the same benefit. These figures indicate that AI tools can significantly enhance internal workforce dynamics.

AI Streamlines Hiring and Talent Acquisition

With 90% of Indian companies expecting workforce expansion over the next 12 months, recruiting skilled professionals is a pressing concern. 46% of HR leaders listed hiring as a top challenge. AI-powered recruitment tools are proving instrumental in addressing these needs by automating repetitive tasks and enabling HR teams to focus on strategic candidate engagement.

The survey found that organizations using AI in their HR software experienced a 57% improvement in recruitment outcomes, compared to 44% among non-AI users. Additionally, 50% of AI-enabled companies reported enhanced candidate and employee experiences, versus 41% for those not using AI.

In performance management, 33% of AI users noticed improvements, compared to 29% of non-AI users, further showcasing AI’s growing importance in HR functions.

India Leads in Global HR AI Adoption

Commenting on the findings, Andrew Blair, the survey analyst, stated, “India is leading the way in HR AI adoption compared to other countries in Capterra’s global survey. As 90% of Indian companies anticipate workforce growth, scalable AI solutions are becoming essential—not just for efficiency, but for enabling HR teams to meet rising talent demands with agility.”

As Indian businesses prepare for a future increasingly shaped by digital transformation, the integration of AI and continuous workforce development appears to be at the heart of HR’s evolution. Organizations that invest in secure, scalable, and AI-enabled HR solutions are likely to be better positioned to attract, retain, and develop top talent in the years ahead.
