AI-Powered HR Tools Set to Revolutionize Nigerian Firms

AI in Human Resources: A Game Changer for Nigerian Businesses

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the landscape of human resource (HR) management across the globe, and Nigeria is no exception. Experts believe that AI-driven HR solutions offer innovative ways to attract, engage, and retain top-tier talent, transforming businesses and making them more competitive and efficient.

At the recently held HCM Reimagined event, organized by i4nnova Limited in collaboration with SAP, Tshif Dambo, HR Value Engineer at SAP Africa, emphasized the transformative potential of incorporating AI into HR functions. He noted that AI can help organizations identify emerging job categories and adapt quickly to ever-changing workforce expectations.

Addressing Challenges Through AI Integration

Dambo highlighted the growing pressure on HR leaders due to the rapid pace of business transformation. Key challenges include talent shortages, the need for agile reskilling, declining employee engagement, and the rising demand for data-driven decision-making. Incorporating AI into HR processes can directly address these issues by improving operational efficiency and enabling smarter, faster decisions.

“When we ask clients which of their HR processes are currently driven by AI, many admit they are still lagging behind,” Dambo revealed. “However, integrating human capital management (HCM) with AI can significantly streamline operations and deliver measurable value to the organization.”

He also stressed the importance of understanding which HR processes are already powered by AI and which ones need enhancement. By doing so, organizations can better align their digital transformation strategies with actual business needs.

Rethinking Traditional HR Practices

Ade Adenuga, Director at i4nnova, noted that the traditional role of HR is evolving. “HR is no longer about gatekeeping,” he said. “It’s now focused on driving business value, improving efficiency, and delivering strategic impact through innovative practices.”

He advocated for a forward-thinking approach to HR that incorporates digital tools and AI technologies. According to Adenuga, this shift is essential for businesses striving to remain competitive in today’s fast-paced environment.

Building a Future-Ready Workforce

While the benefits of AI in HR are clear, concerns remain about job displacement. Panelists at the event acknowledged these fears but stressed that such outcomes are avoidable if professionals continuously upskill and adapt to new technologies. Kelechi Nwosu, another Director at i4nnova, emphasized the need for open communication between employees and managers. He noted that while AI tools increase productivity, they also raise questions about how to effectively use the additional time gained.

“Continuous dialogue ensures that employees are not only more efficient but also more engaged and aligned with organizational goals,” Nwosu added.

Striking a Balance Between AI and Human Touch

Paul Bakare, HR Leader at Nigeria LNG (NLNG), spoke during a panel session about the importance of finding the right balance between AI and the human element. “We can’t wish away the potentials of AI, neither can we do without the human angle,” he said. “A balanced application helps improve overall outcomes.”

Highlighting a practical example, David Oye-Igbemo, HR Director at Nestoil, illustrated how AI can assist in succession planning. He explained, “I can ask AI to categorize and position employees in my nine-box grid, but it would be professional laziness to rely solely on that without personal engagement.”

Embracing Digital Transformation

Adding to the discussion, Nglan Niat, Group HR Director at Dangote, encouraged HR professionals to embrace automation and digital tools. She emphasized that the future of HR lies in the digital transformation of policies, practices, and governance frameworks to remain compliant and competitive amid rapid AI adoption and data proliferation.

Her advice underscores the urgency for HR departments to evolve, not just in terms of technology but also in redefining their roles and responsibilities within the organization.

The Road Ahead

As AI continues to influence the way businesses operate, Nigerian companies must take proactive steps to integrate intelligent systems into their HR functions. Doing so will not only solve current operational challenges but also position them for long-term success in a digitally-driven economy.

The insights shared at the HCM Reimagined event serve as a call to action for HR leaders to embrace innovation, foster continuous learning, and ensure that the human aspect of HR is not lost amid technological advancement.
